It’s June now, which means the Summer movie hype train is plowing full speed ahead. One of the most hotly-anticipated films this year – from a nostalgic point of view, anyhow – is ‘Independence Day: Resurgence,‘ the long-awaited sequel to ‘Independence Day.’ The original film is both set in and came out in 1996, and the sequel follows the original’s approach by updating the action to 20 years later – this year, in their timeline.
20th Century Fox has dropped a few trailers for the film already, including an extended trailer clocking in at over 5 minutes, and we are now being given a short clip directly from the film. Check it out below:
It looks like David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) is traveling the world to uncover the mystery presented in the film, as this clip sees him in Africa as he works toward his goal. From his interaction with the African general that we are shown, it sounds as if aliens have continued to survive on “the dark continent” for the last 20 years, playing not only the role of “down behind enemy lines” as they worked to avoid capture, but also actively hunting humans as well. How this information ties into the overall plot of the film, of course, remains to be seen – but we all don’t have long to wait to find out!
We always knew they were coming back. After ‘Independence Day’ redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ hits US theaters on June 24, 2016.
