Superhero fatigue, huh?  The three biggest openings this year have been superhero movies, and the latest was the biggest. Raking in $181 million, ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ topped both ‘Deadpool’ which opened with $132M and “Batman V Superman’ which opened to the tune of $166M.  ‘Civil War’ now lands at the fifth highest opening of all time behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, ‘Jurassic World’, ‘Avengers’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.  (Lotta superheroes on that list.  Jussayin.)

Otherwise, despite horrific reviews and a weak opening, ‘Mothers Day’ cashed in on the titular holiday and actually did better this weekend than last, taking it to #3.  #2 was, of course, Disney’s powerhouse ‘The Jungle Book’.

Here are the numbers:

  1. Captain America: Civil War (Disney) – $181.7M
  2. The Jungle Book (Disney) – $21.8M
  3. Mother’s Day (Open Road) – $9M
  4. The Huntsman: Winter’s War (Universal) – $3.5M
  5. Keanu (Warner Brothers) – $3M

Thanks to ‘Civil War’, Disney has now already surpassed the $1 billion mark.  ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Zootopia’ added to that figure.

Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis stated:

“When you think of the storied nature of the film business and that four of the top six (domestic) openings of all-time come out of the Marvel universe within an eight-year period — that’s 13 movies combined for nearly $10B worth of box office – it’s a testament to the entire creative team at Marvel Studios led by Kevin Feige. They’ve established an interlocking universe that’s unprecedented and unparalleled in entertainment today with a collection of gifted filmmakers and talent who are invested in the overarching vision of the MCU.”

‘Civil War’ should coast through next weekend.  The only big opening is ‘The Money Monster’ starring George Clooney and the worst person ever Julia Roberts, which absolutely won’t give the Marvel heroes much competition.  The following weekend is loaded with comedies, which may attract some that are worn out by action.  ‘Angry Birds‘, ‘Neighbors 2’ and ‘The Nice Guys’ all hit that weekend, but their primary competition is one another.

Have you seen ‘Captain America: Civil War’ yet?  What did you think?
