X-23

For the time being, Fox is focused on the release of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ in just a few short months, but looking toward the future, director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman are set to return for a follow-up to ‘The Wolverine’, which is likely to be the final outing for Jackman in the title role that made him famous.  Reportedly, the new film will be, at least partially, inspired by the 2008 comic book storyline ‘Old Man Logan’, a tale that incorporates many disparate Marvel characters, most of which will not be available for the film.

But the latest rumor is that ‘Wolverine 3’ may introduce a fan favorite character to possibly compensate for the absence of Hawkeye, The Hulk, etc.

Take this with a grain of salt, but reportedly, the production is seeking a stand-in that matches this description:

“Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian looking females over the age of 21,” specifically at a height of 4′-4’11” and size 0-4 with dark brown hair.”

Now this character could be a number of figures from the comics.  Logan has a tendency to take young girls under his wing, going back to Kitty Pryde and Jubilee.  One of his most recent protegées was Armor (Hisako Ichiki) a young mutant with the power to generate a force field around herself, who, at least for a minute, looked to be the next big breakout X-Man.  She was a focal character in the ‘X-Men’ anime series that only lasted one season.

But more likely is that this new character is X-23 (Laura Kinney) a clone of Wolverine (the 23rd and only successful attempt).  This young female version premiered on the animated series ‘X-Men: Evolution’ and proved so popular that she was brought into the comic book continuity.  She is similar to the original Wolverine in many ways, with animal-like senses, agility and strength, plus two razor sharp claws on each hand and one pointed spike on each foot.

Production on this untitled ‘Wolverine’ movie is set to begin in May, so expect more news to trickle out around then.  The script for this movie is by newcomer David James Kelly.  Besides Jackman, Patrick Stewart is expected to reprise his role as Professor Charles Xavier with Boyd Holbrook taking on an undisclosed role.

What would you like to see in the LAST Wolverine movie?  Any unfulfilled wishes?

‘Wolverine 3’ is scheduled for release on March 3, 2017.
