With The Starkiller Base being The First Order’s superweapon of choice before it was destroyed in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ it almost feels surprising to return to the remnants of the Death Star in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’ Now, director J.J. Abrams is sharing why we’re returning to Emporer Palpatine‘s once-fully operational battle station that was destroyed with him in it. While I’m sure it will somehow be related to Palpatine’s return, that isn’t the specific reason Abrams gives when talking about its comeback:

“It felt like going into the haunted house, the place that you have to go to. This is a story of people having to grapple with the burden the prior generation dumps on those that follow. So literally returning to this wreck of the past and having to fight it out felt like an obvious metaphor, but also felt incredibly cinematic.”

With Palpatine returning, possibly as a Force Ghost, it would likely make sense that he would be haunting a galaxy far, far away from the location he died at.
