In today’s culture of sequels and franchises, it seems like every movie is being set up for a continuation of some sort. It has even gotten to the point where we’re seeing the final installments of a story split into two movies. But as much as possible, we’d like to see the people involved with at the beginning of a tale see it through to the end. Quality of work aside, that’s why it’s kind of cool to hear that people like Zack Snyder, the Russo brothers, and more are signing onto projects for the long haul. Now, one of the filmmakers involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has weighed in on his future at the House of Ideas.
Though he has been hard at work on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, James Gunn recently took the time to answer some questions from his fans. During a Facebook Q&A session from his trailer, the director touched on a number of topics including ‘The Walking Dead’, the soundtracks for his Marvel movies, Spider-Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, and more. But one of the more interesting moments of the stream was when he addressed his future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“Right now I really am just concerned with doing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’. I’m not sure what I’m going to do after this. Marvel has talked to me about continuing on. I’m not sure if that’s what I want to do or if that’s not what I want to do. I really just want to make ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ the greatest possible movie that I can, and something that’s as honest and sincere and true as it can possibly be.”
It’s really great that Gunn is choosing to focus on what’s directly in front of him first, but it would be hard to imagine a movie featuring Star-Lord and the gang without Gunn’s involvement. He has definitely left his unique stamp on this corner of the MCU, so hopefully he decides to stick with it whenever it comes time to make those decisions. Although, like the comic books that inspired these movies, sometimes it works out for the better when a new creative team takes the reins of a character or a team. But let’s cross that bridge when we get to it.
Do you hope that James Gunn sticks with the Guardians of the Galaxy for a third movie? If another filmmaker were to take his place, who do you think would be a great fit for the property? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
