The ‘Fantastic’ Team is back together in this new photo from the set of ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’. Even though he was mind-wiped at the end of the first ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, somehow Jacob Kowalski finds himself once more embroiled in the magical exploits of Newt Scamander, according to this early peek at the next installment of this franchise.
There are a lot of questions about this film, that is not just a sequel to last year’s hit film, but a prequel to the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ books and films, filling in events that were only referenced previously. A lot of attention (and venom) has been focused on Johnny Depp‘s casting as villain Gellert Grindelwald and his interaction with Jude Law as a younger Albus Dumbledore. But there are a lot of throwbacks to the first ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movie, with Katherine Waterston (Tina Goldstein), Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein) and now Dan Fogler (Jacob) returning along with Zoë Kravitz (Leta Lestrange) and Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone).
Aspiring baker Kowalski managed to open his own bakery at the end of the first movie thanks to mystical intervention from Newt. Kowalski Quality Baked Goods did quite well and at one point he had a chance encounter with Queenie which may have jogged his memories of his magical exploits with Newt and the Goldsteins. Somehow he gets drawn back into that world in the sequel, as he is seen accompanying Newt through the streets of Paris above.
J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt
helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he
promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more
followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might
be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But
Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his
former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob,
but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous
and divided wizarding world.
The next trip to the Wizarding World arrives on November 16, 2018.
