Jesse-Eisenberg-Lex-Luthor

The door was left open for Jesse Eisenberg‘s Lex Luthor at the end of ‘Batman V Superman’ returning in future films.  He could very well be back, but he may not resurface in the two ‘Justice League’ films.  Zack Snyder, who directed the divisive ‘Batman V Superman’ is set to direct ‘Justice League – Part One’ but clearly the Big Bad of that film will be Darkseid, as teased in the (inexplicable) dream sequences in ‘BvS’.

Eisenberg seems anxious to reprise his villainous role.  He recently stated:

“I don’t know if they are so settled on where my character goes, I only hope I have another opportunity to work with these wonderful people and play this interesting character.”

Of all the divisive elements of this film, Eisenberg’s spastic take on Luthor, heavily borrowing from his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in ‘The Social Media’ was among the most divisive.  Some have compared his portrayal to that of Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki in Marvel’s movies.  Others feel it single-handedly ruined the film.

While Luthor is a major baddie in the comics, he has never been portrayed as a factor in the formation of the Justice League.  His absence wouldn’t be without precedence.  And despite a promising early career, Eisenberg has increasingly shown that he doesn’t draw mainstream movie audiences, as shown by the failure of his recent starring movies including ‘Adventureland’ and ‘American Ultra’.

It would make total sense for Lex Luthor to be left out of the two ‘Justice League’ movies, but what about future ‘Superman’ solo movies?  Eisenberg has clearly been established as THE Lex Luthor in this universe.  And Luthor is, for better or worse, Superman’s archenemy.  How will Warner Brothers proceed from here?  Bring this controversial actor back?  Recast?

What do you think?  Do you want to see more from this unique take on Lex Luthor?  Or would you be fine with him not returning?  Should they try tapping into Superman’s larger rogue’s gallery?
