If Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg weren’t busy enough working on ‘Preacher’ for AMC they have just cast Josh Hutcherson (‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2‘,’Bridge to Terabithia ‘) to star in the pilot for ‘Future Man’. The series is being heavily looked into by Hulu and is a half hour science fiction comedy whose plot sounds awfully familiar. At this time, Hutcherson is set to produce through Turkeyfoot and is being written by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir.
So how exactly does the plot sound familiar? We,ll from what we know, we’ll be following Hutcherson who is playing Josh Futterman. In the show he spends his nights being a world famous gamer while working as a janitor by day. His handle, call sign, gamer tag, whatever you want to call it, is Futterman (Future Man?) and his skills online end up having him tapped by aliens from the future to prevent mankind’s extinction at the hands of an imminent invasion.
It is no secret that for years Rogen has wanted to remake or continue ‘The Last Starfighter‘ and it looks like he is finally going to have a chance to do just that but with a name change and some creative differences.
If they can tap into the actual spirit of ‘The Last Starfighter’ and not completely botch how gamers actually are, this could be a really funny and creative show. Rogen has a track record of hits or jokes that just make you wince so I’m hoping he has something brilliant in mind. While no longer a heavy gamer myself, I have seen firsthand the years of media not really getting the concept. While it wouldn’t surprise me if Rogen is able to portray gamers accurately, he won’t be in charge of every aspect of the series.
