Things take a macabre twist in this retelling of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’.   In Burr Steers’ adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s spoof, ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ the normally prim and proper Bennett sisters are trained for a special task– battling Regency era undead.  Lily James stars as main character Elizabeth Bennett, while Bella Heathcote, Suki Waterhouse, Ellie Bamber and Millie Brady play her blade-wielding sisters.  Sam Riley plays Elizabeth’s beloved Mr. Darcy, who in this version starts as an enemy monster-hunter.  The cast also includes Lena Heady, Matt Smith, Jack Huston, Douglas Booth and Charles Dance.

A film version of the novel has been planned practically since the book was published, but has struggled with getting made, undergoing rewrites, and passing through the hands of numerous directors and stars including Natalie Portman, who ultimately stayed onboard as a producer.  Current director Steers, for his part, reworked the script adding in more beats from Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Perhaps as a bit of counter programing, Lionsgate has served up a new trailer for the period zombie flick, as well as a new poster.

And here is the poster:
