Can Jon M. Chu‘s ‘Jem and the Holograms’ movie live up to the classic 80s cartoon?  We’ll find out at the end of the month when the controversial musical arrives in theaters. Aubrey Peeples stars as the title singer and her secret identity Jerrica Benton.  Her sisters/band are played by Stefanie Scott (Kimber), Aurora Perrineau (Shana) and Hayley Kiyoko (Aja).  The cast also includes Ryan Guzman as Rio, Molly Ringwald as the girls’ Aunt Bailey and Juliette Lewis as Erica Raymond.  The movie was written by Ryan Landels and produced by Chu, Jason Blum, Scooter Braun, Bennett Schneir, Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis (Hasbro).

To prepare you, here are three new clips from the movie!

The first, entitled “The Plan,” presents the girls’ first meeting with Erica Raymond who seems to have big plans for them after their music video goes viral.

The second is a musical performance of a song called “I’m Still Here” which is actually much better than the previous single, “Youngblood.”

And finally, here is a clip called “We Got Heart,” an apparently impromptu song Jerrica and her sisters put together on the spot.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.
