Academy Award-nominated actress and lead singer of the rock band Juliette and the Licks, Juliette Lewis, has joined the cast of the live-action ‘Jem & The Holograms’ movie.  Her role hasn’t been revealed, but since the Holograms themselves have already been cast, that narrows things down considerably.  The actress most recently appeared in ‘August Osage County’.

The movie has already begun filming, with Jon. M Chu (‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation,’ Step Up 2”) directing, and starring Aubrey Peeples as Jem/Jerrica, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Ryan Guzman as Rio.  Jason Blum and Scooter Braun are producing and all are encouraging fans of the classic eighties property to submit artwork and other things for use in the film.

Who will Lewis portray?

The most obvious choice is one of The Misfits, most likely lead singer Pizzazz.  Lewis is the biggest “name” in the cast, so expect her to get a pretty important part, whereas Stormer and Roxy are more supporting characters.  The fact that Lewis also has rocker experience reinforces that.

But Lewis is somewhat older than the actresses cast as Jem & The Holograms.  Maybe The Misfits will be cast closer in age to them.  If so, another possibility is that the actress will get a CGI makeover as Jem’s computerized guardian Synergy who was based on the likeness and voice of Jerrica and Kimber’s deceased mother Jacqui.  If this is the case, could we also see Lewis in flashbacks to when the girls were kids?

Another possible option is music journalist and VeeJay Lindsey Pierce a.k.a. Lin-Z.  The character served as a pretty visible supporting character on the original cartoon, but… well, MTV doesn’t actually play music videos anymore, therefore you don’t see a lot of VeeJays unless they’re covering live events.  Even so, they could tweak her character to make her more modern.  Maybe she’s a blogger in the new version?

Other less likely possibilities include the Countess DuVoisin, a French fashion designer and socialite that befriended Jem early in the series, Danse, Jem’s choreographer and Video, Jem’s video director.  But once again, the last two characters are depicted as being closer in age to Jem & The Holograms, so I don’t expect Lewis to portray either of them.

In order to get you further pumped up for this movie, check out these just released photos of Integrity Toys’ latest additions to the Jem doll line, including Video, Danse, Regine (a late-addition aspiring fashion designer) and The Misfits’ sidekick Clash, who comes with interchangeable heads sporting both hair styles she rocked on the show, the original red and turquoise and the later purple (which is what the original doll had).

Things are getting Outrageous!

What do you think?  Who would be the perfect role for Lewis? While we wait for the official announcement of Lewis’ role, check her out with her band during a live performance on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:’
