Did we all jump to the wrong conclusion too soon?!  Were we wrong about ‘Jem and the Holograms’ being nothing like the cartoon?  Well, a new trailer has debuted and the answer is maybe!  Maybe there is a flickering of hope.

The newest trailer retains a lot of the same tone of the first few clips, which I think spell out the entire movie: Jerrica (Audrey Peeples) overcomes her shyness by adopting the false identity of Jem to post her music online; the video becomes a sensation; Jem and her sisters Kimber (Stefanie Scott), Aja (Hayley Kiyoko) and Shana (Aurora Perrineau) are signed by Erica Raymond (Juliette Lewis) to Starlight Music, but the record company wants to completely change them, eventually making Jem a solo artist; Jem/Jerrica realizes that it’s more important to stay true to herself and her sisters and they rebel.

Despite some glitzy fashions, extreme makeup and streaks of multicolored hair, there was little else that resembled the drama and excitement of the original cartoon from the 80s.  But one missing link may actually be there after all… Synergy!

In the TV series, Jerrica and Kimber’s father Emmett built a super computer named Synergy that could project completely realistic holograms through Jerrica’s star-shaped earrings, helping her create the facade of Jem as well as get out of harrowing scrapes, usually perpetrated by rival band The Misfits.

Though not Synergy doesn’t possess free will, she did have something of a personality and was quite nurturing of the girls.  After discovering Emmett’s diary, they learned that Synergy had been programmed with the personality and voice recordings of their mother Jacqui, a successful singer on her own right, who’d been popular in the 70s until her death in a plane crash.  Unable to bear Synergy being too similar to Jacqui, Emmett altered her just enough that she didn’t remind him too much of his deceased wife.  (This included making her purple.)

Synergy was a vital part of ‘Jem’ and one that was sorely missing in the earlier trailer, which gave the impression that the Jem identity was constructed by Erica and Starlight Music.  This new clip may offers some hope that the movie may actually skew closer to the show!

Okay, so it’s not really the same Synergy fans are used to, but this is just a trailer so there may be more to the story.

Does this give you a little more confidence in the film?  Could there be more elements from the show that may turn up in the finished product?  Let’s hope!

‘Jem and the Holograms’ opens on October 23rd.
