If you’ve been following the development of the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ movie as it prepares for launch later this year, then you’ll probably be interested in watching this little featurette released not too long ago. It may have been easy to miss since it was released on IGN’s YouTube channel instead of 20th Century Fox’s.

I think it’s no secret that I have yet to be won over by the ‘Fantastic Four’ trailers, and this featurette really doesn’t do anything to persuade me. First of all, the actors make quite a few questionable statements that suggest they really don’t know anything about the comic book version of the Fantastic Four or superhero comics in general. The first superheros to “have problems”? Really? “Problems” are what superhero comics have always been about. If there weren’t “problems” then there would be no story!

Second, they come across as if they’re trying to explain the basic plot of the movie, but all they really do is describe setting. There’s no real plot information given, just explanation about the origin story that really, we all know already, so I’m not really certain why they bothered.

I felt that the only really interesting part is when they start talking about the relationship between the characters, but then the featurette is over. Honestly, I would have preferred the entire thing be about their relationships. Whether or not the titular group has believable chemistry is what’s going to make or break this film and I’d like to know more about that and what sets this ‘Fantastic Four’ film from previous incarnations. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Now in all fairness, we shouldn’t judge a movie based on a few trailers and the actors’ ignorance of the source material. There’s always the chance that the movie could be good and we should give it the benefit of the doubt. Who knows? Maybe a heaping helping of skepticism will actually improve the experience of watching the movie.

So what do you think about the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ movie? Do you think the cast has some good chemistry together, or will it be just like the movies from a decade ago? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Fantastic Four’ will be released in theaters this coming August 7th.
