Bad news for everyone looking forward to the planned ‘Justice League Dark‘ movie. It’s currently being reported that Guillermo del Toro will not, in fact, be directing the movie and may not even be attached to the movie at all anymore.

It wasn’t too long ago that del Toro had turned in a script revision and had said that the screenplay was “really solid” but he hadn’t committed to actually directing the movie, citing concerns about whether or not he would have time for it. Del Toro’s schedule is likely full with the ‘Pacific Rim’ sequel and other projects so while it may be disappointing, it’s not really surprising that he isn’t directing JLD. However, it is unfortunate that he might not be attached to the movie at all anymore. If nothing else, any input he could give during the movie’s development would be valuable. Still, the movie itself doesn’t appear to have been canceled or anything quite so dramatic, so there is still hope to get a good director to replace him.

There’s no real reason yet to assume the worst about this news, but at the same time, it couldn’t have come at a worse time. Wounds are still fresh from the cancellation of the excellent ‘Constantine‘ series which most likely would have tied into the ‘JLD’ movie. John Constantine is one of the members of the Justice League Dark, and the series had introduced at least one other member in the form of Deadman before he died. It seems likely that had the series continued, we would have seen other future members of the team.

The ‘Justice League Dark’ is a collection of DC comic’s heroes who are involved with more supernatural/occult forces who take care of dangers like demons, ghosts, and curses that the more conventionally powerful heroes of the Justice League can’t handle. Besides Constantine and Deadman, members of the ‘JLD’ included, but are not limited to, the magician Zatanna, Etrigan the Demon, and The Phantom Stranger.

Ultimately we still don’t know where the ‘Justice League Dark’ movie would fit into the rest of the upcoming DC movies or when it might be planned for in the future. So there’s probably a lot of time yet for Warner Bros. to find the right crew to make the film.
