Back in 2013, Fox Digital Entertainment and QMx Interactive Inc. announced that they would be making the dreams of many Browncoats come true with ‘Firefly Online.’ After many years of teasing an online game based on Joss Whedon’s beloved cult classic sci-fi/western series ‘Firefly,’ it’s finally coming to fruition. After the initial announcement at San Diego Comic Con in 2013, the game returned to the mecca of pop culture a year later to reveal that Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Sean Maher, Michael Fairman, and Ron Glass would all be reprising their roles. Most recently, the first gameplay footage was unveiled at last year’s New York Comic Con. But now, a new addition to the cast has been announced and it looks like someone is jumping ship from another iconic spacecraft for the job.
Earlier this week, Wil Wheaton shared on his website that he would be voicing the male avatar in ‘Firefly Online.’ The actor known for his roles in ‘Stand By Me’, ‘The Big Bang Theory’, and ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ expressed his excitement for joining the verse by posting the following message from FFO:
“This just in from Firefly Online HR: Wil Wheaton has joined the FFO voiceover team and will be playing the part of you – that is, he will be giving voice to the male player character. We couldn’t be more excited that Wil is taking on this huge part. (There’s lots of Chinese cursing too!)”
While there’s no word on who will provide the voice for the female avatar just yet, Wheaton is set to record his dialog in a few weeks. Once the game is released in the Spring, players will have the option play as his character as he interacts with Captain Mal Reynolds, Jayne Cobb, the notorious Niska, and many others who aim to misbehave.
