As a new ‘Terminator’ film is set to hit theaters, the cast and crew are excited for the film and the studio is telling us that it will be the first of a trilogy of films to continue the story of the franchise, with its lead already signed on for the next installment.

Sound familiar? Back when ‘Terminator: Salvation’ came out with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, we heard the exact same thing. Bale and Worthington were ready for the sequels, the cliff-hanger ending left the door open, and rumors abounded about the big plot twist coming for part 2. And the movie tanked with critics, barely making its money back domestically (though still garnering enough oversees to be seen as “profitable”), and everyone dumped the idea of continuing that story in a trilogy.

Here we are 6 years later, another ‘Terminator’ film coming out, with Arnold Schwarzenegger telling us he’s coming back for Part 2 (when asked about filming the sequel, the actor stated “Yes, of course. Next year”). The studio is telling us ‘Terminator: Genisys‘ is Part 1 of a planned trilogy, and fans are already skeptical based on the trailer, the idea of a reboot, and the age of the film’s star, with Schwarzenegger being over 70. Despite Schwarzenegger’s claim that he’s signed on for the sequel (without mentioning that it ruins any chance of suspense that he might die in ‘Genisys’), it all comes down to the quality of the film, and whether or not fans are going to embrace the new actors and story, and make the movie into a hit. Basically, they should not be counting on a franchise before they see how the first film fares with audiences.

The fact that Schwarzenegger said they would start shooting next year also seems a bit premature, but there’s always a chance that he just gave a quick answer without knowing all the facts. And who could blame him after all the questions and media attention he gets for these movies?
