Pop Quiz! You see a funnel forming from the sky over the ocean, do you
- A) Pull out your phone and tweet about it.
- B) Wait until you know if it’s filled with sharks before deciding if you’ll take shelter in your basement or evacuate your home.
- C) Grab your chainsaw and pop a few ibuprofen, because it’s going to be a long day.
These are the kinds of questions that you need to know the answers to if you ever want to even HOPE to survive a Sharknado! At least that’s what writer Andrew Shaffer will tell you in his new book ‘How to Survive a Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters’. In this ‘Official Guide to Staying Alive’, Shaffer details exactly how to survive the situations presented in some of the various SyFy Channel original movies that have been released over the years. Between the situations from films like ‘Sharknado’, ‘Ghost Shark’, ‘Pirahnaconda’, and ‘Stonehenge Apocalypse’, there are plenty of absurdly disastrous unnatural occurrences to choose from, Shaffer delves into some of the best (and worst) of them!
‘How to Survive a Sharknado’ primarily reads like an ACTUAL survival guide, treating the events of these various B-Movies as entirely realistic and likely to happen. It’s pretty fantastic really. Aside from the obvious “this is the scenario, this is how to survive it” aspects of the book, it also features a plethora of fun factoids about the creatures or unnatural disasters seen in the aforementioned films. Like before reading this, I’d have had no idea offhand that Saber-tooth Tigers weren’t actually tigers at all, but actually an entirely separate species of big cats scientifically known as Smilodon! Or the difference between a Volcano and a Super-Volcano. Or how to go about treating Manticore poisoning for that matter! This book is chock full of fun facts about the terrible beasties featured in these hilariously awesome films! ’How to Survive a Sharknado’ is actually probably the first book of it’s kind to gather so much information about so many fantastical creatures from different film companies. Keeping all of these films under the SyFy Channel banner has made this book possible, and it’s overall existence is pretty wonderful in an of itself for any fan of these new-classic B-Movies.
On top of all of the ‘survival’ information and fun factoids, Shaffer has taken the time to sprinkle fun (and fairly random) recipes throughout the book. So now you’ll be set with your new knowledge of how to make the perfect ‘Grilled Shark Steak’ or ‘Fried Gatoroid’ the next time you survive a deadly encounter with some of these monstrous creatures! There are also a few recipes for mixed drinks on the off chance you’re stuck indoors trying to wait out the apocalypse!
Ultimately, ‘How to Survive a Sharknado’ is the perfect companion to have on hand while watching some of the most absurdly awesome movies the SyFy Channel has to offer. It’s full of great information about some of the most iconic creatures and events in SyFy Channel Original Movie history and is a must own item for fans of B-Grade creature features! It also makes a fantastic companion piece to the now iconic ‘Zombie Survival Guide’. The team here at ScienceFiction.com highly recommends it!
