We’ve known for awhile that John Boyega (‘Attack the Block’, ’24: Live Another Day’) was part of the cast for ‘Star Wars: Episode VII‘ and now it appears that his part might be the central role in the upcoming film! While many early rumors put either the original cast of Skywalker, Han, and Leia as the center of the story or perhaps their children, a new report is changing that up a bit.

Aside from his name being listed first on the original cast list that was released, what else points into this direction? Well anonymous sources have told Latino-Review a few key points worth mentioning. Primarily that Boyega’s character “has the story arc that brings him into Star Wars’ greater universe” and will give the movie a viewpoint that “has echoes of Luke’s arc in A New Hope.” That sounds like a central role to me if the sources are true. What is interesting is that Boyega’s character is not set to be a Jedi or a Padawan at the introduction of the film, though it has no direct say if he will end up becoming one as things go on. Could this be Luke Skywalker’s future apprentice?

Boyega’s character isn’t the only one being brought up in the article though! It looks to be that the series, or at least the first film, is set to have a female villain that is most likely a Sith. With both Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie having just joined the cast there is a good chance, if this rumor is true, one of these two may have joined the Dark Side. One has to ask, however, if they are the master or just an apprentice to a greater evil?

Other plot points aren’t quite as juicy. While the story will take 30 years after the events of ‘Return of the Jedi,’ it looks as if there isn’t a New Republic in the story quite yet. Are we still building a new political structure? Will there be a faction of The Republic and The Empire still in play? Will everything just be a free for all with certain systems being designated as safe? There is a lot up in the air and it will be a major focal point of how the story is told. A side note also says that the Boba Fett armor is around but there was no word if that meant someone was using it, if Boba was still alive, or if it was just on display somewhere in the film.

Are you looking forward to the next iteration of ‘Star Wars’? Do you think Boyega is a good choice for the lead? What are you most looking forward to on our return to a world that is set “a long long time ago in a galaxy far away”?

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ starring John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker premieres on December 18, 2015.
