There is a huge piece of surprise casting that was just announced giving us the return of one of the original ‘Jurassic Park‘ actors who will now be making an apperance in ‘Jurassic World‘. With the revelation that Sam Neill (‘Jurassic Park 3’, ‘Event Horizon’), Laura Dern (‘The Master’, ‘Inland Empire’)  and Jeff Goldblum  (‘Independence Day’,’The Fly’)  not returning, who could it be? Writer and director of the film, Colin Trevorrow, recently sat down to announce the news and it is one character you wouldn’t expect to see.

That really makes you wonder who is coming back, right? Well it ends up being B.D. Wong (‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’, ‘Stay’). Wait, who? He’s the guy who played Dr. Henry Wu of course! (For those unfamiliar with the novels you might once again be scratching your head and wondering “who?”)

As Trevorrow explains:

“There is a character from the first film who makes sense in our world.  This hasn’t been announced yet, but BD Wong will be returning as Dr. Henry Wu. He had a much larger role in the original novel – he was the engineer of this breakthrough in de-extinction. He spent two decades living in Hammond’s shadow, under appreciated. We think there’s more to his story.”

Trevorrow does realize that this may disappoint fans who were hoping to see Neill, Dern and Goldblum reprise their roles:

“I know a lot of fans want to see the original characters back. They’re iconic. But I respect those actors too much to shoehorn them into this story for my own sentimental reasons. Jurassic Park isn’t about the bad luck of three people who keep getting thrown into the same situation. The only reason they’d go back to that island is if the screenwriters contrived a reason for them to go.”

Which is fair, though I wouldn’t say it was a stretch to find Alan and Ellie being needed once more.

Are you excited about Wong’s return? Are you hesitant without knowing more of the backstory? Do you care as he wasn’t one of the main characters in the original film? Share your thoughts below!
