While Hugh Jackman (‘The Wolverine‘, ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’) has been no stranger to playing the hero as he’s starred as Wolverine in 7 films to date, he’s not usually associated with being the villain. It looks like that may change as he’s lining up to play Blackbeard in Joe Wright’s (‘Hanna’, ‘Atonement’) new take on a classic fairy tale titled ‘Pan‘. We already know Hugh can pull off a fierce looking beard so now it’s time to see if he can pull off the full pirate feel.

The concept behind the film is a solid origin story for Peter Pan and will be delivering a few things with an interesting twist. For starters, Blackbeard is going to be the main villain in the film. So how will this play out? Well Pan is a young orphan who is taken to Neverland and becomes a hero that leads a revolt against the evil pirates who are in control. If Blackbeard is running things, what does that mean for the infamous Captain Hook? Well, apparently he is going to be Pan’s closest friend until he ends up going bad.

Could this be a lead in for a sequel or perhaps a trilogy? Will we even know Hook when we first see him or will he lose his hand which gives him his signature hook while betraying his friends? There’s a lot of room for speculation here as they haven’t been giving us too much on details quite yet.

While the role for Blackbeard looks set, Pan himself is not cast yet as they are looking for a newer actor to fill his shoes. Also not yet cast are Hook himself as well as an actress in her mid-20’s who is being sought is for the fill the role of Tiger Lily.

The film is planned to be released on June 26th, so the studio is going to have to get the rest of the casting squared away soon. If, for no other reason, is that Jackman is already set to also star in Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Chappie’ and while he’s hesitant on resuming the role of Logan, it wouldn’t be terribly surprising to see him pop up in either ‘X-Force‘ or ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘.
