‘American Horror Story: Coven’ has just launched its new season, but acclaimed actress Jessica Lange dropped a bit of a bombshell, stating that she may only have one more season of the show left in her and that she may be retiring from acting overall!
The actress stated “No, I’ll probably do, maybe … if we do another one, I’ll do that, but then … yeah. Because I’m kind of coming to the end of acting, anyhow.”
Of course ‘American Horror Story’ reinvents itself every season which means Lange (along with many of her costars) has played three different characters over the course of these three seasons. (Currently, she plays Fiona Goode, the “Supreme” witch and mother of Sarah Paulson’s character, Cordelia.)
But is she serious? Series creator Ryan Murphy offers some hope. “Every year she says, ‘OK, that’s my last one.’ But she’s already committed to the fourth series. I can see ‘American Horror Story’ going for 10 years, 12 years, 15 years. I think it’s limitless because it re-energizes every year, and I would love for Jessica Lange to be part of it every year.”
Murphy goes on to explain, “Every year, I sort of gather Sarah and Jessica, and I say, ‘This is what I’m thinking about, this is what I’m interested in, this is who I think you’ll play.’ So there’s always the option of I want to come back or I don’t.”
Last season (subtitled ‘Asylum‘), Lange played a nun, Sister Jude, but Murphy granted her wish to play a “Marlene Dietrich figure… she got to wear Saint Laurent heels and make-up this season after last year.”
In a further change of pace, Murphy states “She hasn’t in her career had a lot of occasion to do comedic stuff, and this part definitely has that. Her stuff with Kathy Bates in particular is very funny.”
What do you think? Can ‘American Horror Story’ survive without Jessica Lange? Or does the revolving nature of the show allow for various actors and actresses to come on board and leave after their seasons are over? (For instance, Zachary Quinto is, so far, absent this season.) Comment below!
