The sequel to ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘) is coming out later this year and they’ve just released a great banner for Peter Jackson’s second installment in this epic trilogy: ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’. Banner teasers are probably my least favorite compared to a set of images, production video, or a trailer.
Sure the wide screen shot has appeal, but it’s usually only one image (often to be put up at movie theaters) that barely teases us any information. This one only shows us the hint that there will be arachnids. Of course, to be fair, I can’t get much more excited for this film than I already am. I’ve been eagerly awaiting it’s release since the first Hobbit film came to an end.
While there are no teases of Smaug here, this banner features Martin Freeman (‘The Lord of the Rings’) as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage (Captain America: The First Avenger’) as Thorin, Fili, Aidan Turner (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’) as Dean O’Gorman (‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’) as Kili, and Graham McTavish (‘Red Dwarf’) as Dwalin as they make their way through the treacherous webs of Mirkwood. In the novel this band of adventurers pass through Mirkwood on their way to Smaug and are first captured by giant spiders and later when they escape are taken prisoner by elves.
So yes, fans of the movies who haven’t read the novels, we’re going to be getting some giant spiders in the next movie. If you have arachnophobia you might be a little weary on parts of this film.
If banners are not your thing either, then make sure you return to ScienceFiction.com tomorrow as a new trailer for the film will be released!
‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ is directed by Peter Jackson and will open in theaters on December 11, 2013.
