Filming for ‘Tomorrowland’, the highly mysterious new project from director Brad Bird and writer Damon Lindelof, began last month, but primary production officially began last week. Even before the cameras started to role, we’ve been getting a number of hints and clues about the movie’s story. But now that the viral marketing game known as The Optimist wrapped up at this year’s D23 Expo and the cast and crew are in Canada shooting, we finally have our first real look at the film.
The first pictures from the set come us courtesy of YVR Shoots and they show off what looks like Disneyland back in the day. However, while it has been said that the theme park would be involved somehow, this is actually a recreation of Walt Disney’s ‘It’s A Small World’ exhibition from the 1964 World’s Fair, complete with period era clothing and costumed characters from the Happiest Place On Earth. You can check out all the shots in the gallery below:
It’s very interesting to note that Laurie is dressed from the 60s as well. I was under the impression that the film would take place in modern day or the future. But there’s still a chance that it does. The infamous 1952 box that was said to inspire the movie included something about a secret room underneath the attraction at the Fair. Could that secret room possibly contain some time traveling apparatus or a door to another dimension? Yeah, that sounds pretty out there, but you never really know with this movie. All we know for sure is what it says in the synopsis:
Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”
There is still plenty to uncover about this incredibly intriguing movie, but from what we’ve seen and read so far, what do you think of ‘Tomorrowland’? Do you have any theories about why we’re at the 1964 World’s Fair? Share all your thoughts in the comments.
‘Tomorrowland’ starring George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Raffey Cassidy, Thomas Robinson, and Britt Robertson is scheduled for release on December 12, 2014.
