In anticipation of the ‘Game of Thrones‘ season-three DVD release on February 18th, the perfect post-Valentine’s Day gift for your loved ones who are into hardcore nudity, beheadings, and political intrigue, the producers are whetting our collective whistles with some sneak peeks at extras such as deleted scenes that sadly ended up on the cutting-room floor.

If you thought fishing was a relaxing and tension-free sport, check out this scene between Grand Maester Pycelle and Tywin Lannister about decisions that were made by the acting Hand to the King in Tywin’s absence.

As interesting as never-before-seen clips are, it’s easy to see why this one was left out. Some fans fret about the short 10-episode length of each season coupled with the fact that producers have stated season 7 will be their final one, worrying that with such rich and intertwining storylines, certain important facets will begin to fall by the wayside. This is not such a clip.

While it was intriguing, we already knew Pycelle’s a lying, manipulative snake from the first time we saw him hopping out of bed (with a prostitute) like a spring chicken, moments after tottering around the Small Council Chamber. We all know Tywin can end anyone at any time just by glowering at them enough, and the fact that he didn’t really need Pycelle’s help past the storm on the Mad King’s gates was already evident. So, fun to watch, but understandable deletion.

Review sites have mocked seemingly extraneous scenes before, such as one in the last season that seemed to exist solely to serve as proof that Podrick Payne is so good in bed, he enjoys the company of prostitutes free-of-charge. However, in an otherwise fast-paced, blink-and-you’ll-miss-a-character’s-full-backstory setting, it seems humorous bits of business should be welcomed.

I have full faith in the producers and writers parsing what’s needed from the books into an engaging television experience. George R.R. Martin’s finishing the series in the next three years? That’s keeping me up nights.
