Last year we had heard a film based around ‘The Witcher‘ was on the way with a possible series order, and now the series is coming to Netflix with no real news on the film. Not only will it be coming to Netflix but we’ve got some fun details about the show.
For starters, it isn’t based on the trilogy of games but about the eight-book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Sadly, Sapkowski hasn’t earned any income from the games, but he will be a creative consultant on the series so not only will he have a say in what happens but the author will finally be getting at least a partial pay day.
At this time Sean Daniel (‘The Mummy,”Ben-Hur’) and Jason Brown (‘The Expanse’) are set as the show’s Executive Producers with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko.
According to Erik Barmack, Netflix Vice President, International Series:
“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar. We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Netflix members around the world.”
Sapkowski himself added:
“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”
Following true to the source material means there might be some changes from the video game franchise which some might not expect. However, visually we’ll be seeing some of the same amazing visuals as Baginski who is one of the Executive Producers mentioned above directed the amazing cinematics that has opened each of the games and will be in the director’s chair for at least one episode of each of the seasons.
Assuming ratings greenlight the show for more than one that is.
Sean Daniel and Jason Brown also stated:
“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”
With the dark world that exists here, this will be similar to ‘Game of Thrones’ in some aspects though quite a bit more brutal. With HBO prepping five spinoff shows there is clearly a considerable interest in mature fantasy shows and Netflix has picked one of the perfect properties to capitalize on that.
