Considering that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ might be the least known Marvel property being developed into a movie at this time, there is a ton of mystery surrounding it. Also, since the team’s history spans decades and countless intergalactic regions, there are so many possibilities when it comes to who will be included in the cast. That’s why when star like Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, and Benicio Del Toro were added to the ensemble, there were nearly infinite possibilities as to who they would play. But now, while speculation has been running wild since these three were added to the roster, it seems that we have some confirmation on who exactly they’ll be playing.
According to Den of Geek’s “solid source”, the previous rumors labeling Del Toro as The Collector and Pace as Ronan The Accuser are indeed true. Both characters play a big part in Marvel’s Cosmic Universe and, while each one has been known to straddle the line of good and evil throughout their careers, it’s a safe bet that Star-Lord, Gamora, and company may not want to end up on their bad sides. But considering that Pace has been set as the main villain of the film, the formidable Kree warrior will likely be clashing with the titular team.
As for Gillan, the former ‘Doctor Who’ companion is lined up to play Nebula, a treacherous space pirate and the self-professed granddaughter of Thanos. Previously, there were rumors circulating that she could play Angela, the space bounty hunter originally created by Neil Gaiman for Todd McFarlane’s ‘Spawn’ comics that recently popped up in the pages of Marvel Comics during ‘Age of Ultron’. Though it was a very interesting theory that the former Amelia Pond would be playing the flame-haired, sword-wielding vixen that’s soon to be making an appearance in Brian Michael Bendis’ current ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ series, it’s likely that the film was too far along in development to include the new character in the script. The win here, though, is that no matter who she’d be playing, we’d be getting Karen Gillan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With the rouges gallery getting a bit crowded, it’ll be interesting to just how big of a part Thanos will play. Last seen in the post-credits scene of ‘The Avengers’, it was assumed he’d be the big bad in the upcoming Phase Two, but the latest word is that the Mad Titan is being set up for a long run in Marvel Studios’ continuing mythology, so at this point it looks like that we’ll be seeing more of his henchmen than the big purple chin itself this time around.
While we haven’t gotten any official word announcing this cast list, the report is confident that this is the direction that James Gunn is going in and that a full casting line-up will be revealed at Comic-Con at the end of the month.
What do you think about these casting choices? Do you think that Lee Pace, Benecio del Toro, and Karen Gillan fit the parts of Ronan The Accuser, The Collector, and Nebula respectively? Let us know what you think in the comments.
