The casting saga continues with Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. What seems like every available young male in Hollywood is up for the role of Peter Quill, the leader of the intergalactic peacekeeping force that goes by the code name Star-Lord. Names like Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who passed on the role in favor of ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’), Lee Pace, Jack Huston, and so many more have all been talked about as being in contention for the part. Now, according to Latino Review, three more names have been caught in the extremely wide net that Marvel is casting. Apparently Wes Bentley (‘The Hunger Games’), Chris Lowell (‘The Help’), and Cam Gigandet (‘Easy A’) have all been added to the no-longer-short list of actors that could lead this Phase Two film. BUT that’s not even the biggest news to come out of this report!

Apparently, Disney and Marvel are looking into the availability of two of the biggest names in comedy to see if they could appear in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Word on the street is that the studio is currently courting Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey to take roles in James Gunn’s upcoming film. It’s pretty much a given that they won’t be playing Star-Lord or Drax the Destroyer, so then who’s left and funny? My first guess is Rocket Raccoon, but Groot is also an option as well (even though all he says to my knowledge is “I am Groot.”). The report is very vague about whether they’d both be in the film or if they’re both up for the same role, but it’s safe to say that no one ever assumed that Ace Ventura and Billy Madison would be on a cosmic team of superheroes together.

This wouldn’t be Carrey’s first time donning a super powered persona. In ‘Batman Forever’, the ‘In Living Color’ alumni played the wacky, redheaded Riddler opposite Val Kilmer’s Batman. More recently, Carrey joined the cast of Jeff Wadlow’s ‘Kick-Ass 2’ as Colonel Stars and Stripes, the leader of the super group Justice Forever, so we know that the actor can be a super team player already. As for Sandler, the closest he’s come to doing anything like this is lending his voice to the animated Dracula in ‘Hotel Transylvania’, which is all he’d have to do if the role the actors are up for is the sarcastic, silver-tongued Rocket Raccoon.

Even if they’re up for non-hero roles, Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is likely to have a good amount of humor, and in their prime, Carrey and Sandler were known to make legions of fans laugh a good bit, so no matter what the role is, they’re sure to bring on the comedy. Hopefully it’s the good stuff though and not the ‘Jack and Jill’ or the ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ sort of funny.

What do you think of the studio giving Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey a look for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? Do you think that they’d fit as Rocket Raccoon or Groot? Or wouldn’t Danny DeVito make an even better Rocket Raccoon? (I’m not letting up on that one.) Share your thoughts in the comments below!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is scheduled to hit theaters on August 1st, 2014.
