The search for the lead in James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is on, but according to a recent report, the list has just been narrowed down from five to three. The initial list included Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne, but now the new list consists of only one name from the original group.

According to Variety, Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi, and an unnamed actor are all finalists for the role of Peter Quill, the half human, half alien leader of the intergalactic peacekeeping team which includes Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora.

This is an interesting turn of events considering that Levi already has a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the upcoming ‘Thor: The Dark World’, the actor will play Fandral the Dashing because Josh Dallas was unable to reprise his role due to commitments to ‘Once Upon A Time’. This choice sounds highly suspect because this doesn’t sound like something Marvel Studios would do. Sure, they picked Chris Evans, who already played the Human Torch in ‘Fantastic Four’, to play Captain America, but those two movies were set in different worlds. Hopefully the studio won’t end up casting the same actor in dual, unrelated roles in their universe.

However, a recent tweet from the director leads us to believe that this might not be the case. After the Variety article was published, Gunn took to Twitter to debunk the report.

Maybe things aren’t as finalized as Variety claims, but note that he said almost everything, so there may be some truth to the initial report. Oddly, the tweet is no longer there if you go back to Gunn’s timline. Time will tell which parts are true and which are false, but one thing is certain: We will have our Star-Lord sooner rather than later.
