Seven months ago, ‘Chronicle’ director Josh Trank signed on to direct a film adaptation of ‘Shadow of the Colossus’. Since then, while Trank was busy securing a date for his reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise, this video game project laid dormant and Sony searched for the writer. Now, it looks like a writer has finally joined the fray.

According to /Film, Seth Lochhead has been attached to have another go at Justin Marks’ 2009 script. The new young writer is best known for writing the script for ‘Hanna’, the 2011 fairy tale action thriller starring Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. In fact, that’s Lochhead’s only produced screenplay, but he’s been working on the Michael Bay-produced ‘The Governess’ for Warner Bros. and an adaptation of the book ‘The Age of Miracles’ for River Road Entertainment. With some dabblings in fantastical elements, this green writer may find himself in familiar territory.

The story follows a young man named Wander who ventures into a forbidden land on horseback to bring back his dead lover by summoning a demon who can wake the dead and defeating 16 colossi that dominate the mystical place. ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ is widely cited as an influential title in the video game industry because of it’s minimalist landscape designs, immersive gameplay, and emotional journey, besides the strong narrative arc and powerful visual effects.

Trank is supposed to be working on ‘The Red Star’ as his next film, and with ‘Fantastic Four’ coming up in 2015, that’ll probably begin pre-production sooner rather than later, so it’s still unclear when work on ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ is set to begin. At least Lochhead has some time to work on his draft of the script that way.
