Less than 6 weeks since the release of ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ in theaters, Paramount Pictures has announced that it has a release date for the 5th installment of the found footage franchise: October 25, 2013.

‘Paranormal Activity 4’ which was released on October 19th was the lowest grossing movie of all the ‘Paranormal Activity’ movies taking in only $53.4 million domestically and $82 million internationally bringing it to a $134.4 million current worldwide total. Compared to its predecessor, ‘Paranormal Activity 3,’ which earned $54 million domestically and a total of $80 million in its opening weekend alone, the 4th installment received a very lackluster reception. However, since the film only cost $5 million to make, even with these low numbers, it is still considered a huge success.

There is obviously much interest in the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise as currently there is a Latino spin off in the works which is set to be released in the spring and is said to be written and will be directed by Michael Landon’s son, Christopher.

With the release date in place, things should be moving along for ‘Paranormal Activity 5.’ Hopefully in this 5th installment, the producers and writers can figure out what went wrong with the last film and bring the franchise back on track. And if you haven’t seen the film yet, pre-orders are being taken for the Blu-ray/DVD version which is said to have a director’s cut included.

And if you are wondering, the October 25, 2013 release date pits ‘Paranormal Activity 5’ against ‘The World’s End’ so it will be interesting to see who will win out: A tired but reliable found footage horror film or a comedic end of the world sci-fi outing? Which one would you go see?
