Production has begun on ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ and to celebrate, a new teaser clip has been released, showing off the cast in their full costumes: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress. The clip is very brief, but fans can get a glimpse of Harley swinging her mallet, Huntress aiming her crossbow, Black Canary shimmying behind a microphone, and Montoya drinking straight out of a bourbon bottle. What isn’t seen, unfortunately, are comic-accurate costumes. Similar to previous live-action takes on The Huntress, Winstead is wearing black leathery street clothes, with a long sheer coat. Basco’s Cassandra Cain is simply dressed in a hot pink hoodie, which matches her arm cast, indicating that she may suffer an injury at some point during the film. Ewan McGregor‘s Black Mask does not appear, perhaps because the filmmakers are waiting to make his big reveal later.

Cathy Yan is directing the picture, which takes place in a Batman-free Gotham City, as Harley teams with the other female protagonists to protect Cassandra from Black Mask. Conflicting reports point to Cassandra as either a young assassin that Black Mask hopes to employ to replace The Huntress, or as an innocent young girl who comes to possess an object that Black Mask is after. Christina Hodson penned the script. The picture is expected to be rated-R.
‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ opens in theaters on February 7, 2020.
