Mary Elizabeth Winstead discussed her role in Warner Brothers’ DC Comics adaptation ‘Birds of Prey’ and in doing so revealed when the film will begin production.  Cathy Yan is directing with a script by Christina Hodson.  It appears that this will be the next DC Comics movie following ‘The Joker’, which does not take place in the same continuity as the others.

In an interview with Bionic Buzz, (via ComicBook.com) Winstead stated:

“It’s sort of a spinoff of Suicide Squad.  It kind of follows Harley Quinn, which is Margot Robbie’s character from those films, and this sort of girl gang that she puts together. I play Huntress, and we’ve got Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez and Ewan McGregor. It’s a really fun, fun cast. We haven’t started shooting yet, but we start shooting in January, and I can’t wait.”

Rosie Perez portrays Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya, while Ewan McGregor plays the film’s villain Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask, perhaps one of Batman’s most twisted and sadistic foes. Also, just added to the cast is Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain.  In addition to starring as Harley Quinn, Robbie is producing the movie.

She further added:

“It’s really exciting, and even the process of going through getting the role and everything was a very different experience than I’ve typically been through.  Being with the other actresses and a female director and just the whole energy behind this is so unique, so I’m really happy about that.

Rumor has it, when ‘Birds of Prey’ begins production, it will be under the working title ‘Fox Force Five’.  (Any ‘Pulp Fiction’ fans?)  The January start date makes sense, as ‘Birds of Prey’ is due to be released on February 7, 2020.  That allows for plenty of time for post-production.  This will be a grittier take on the DC Universe, as it has been announced that this picture will be rated-R.

Are you excited to see this film moving closer to reality?
