Empire Strikes Back

While both ‘The Making of Star Wars’ and ‘From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga’ had heavy rotation on television years back and were readily available on VHS, ‘The Making of the Empire Strikes Back’ didn’t and had appeared to be lost to the ages. However, Michael Parbot’s documentary has now found its way onto YouTube for “Star Wars” fans the world over to see! The channel “Adywan revisited” bought a DVD which had a copy of the documentary at auction and put it online for audiences to see for the first time in nearly 40 years!

There is a ton of fun material in here for longtime fans, including an extensive interview with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford about the potential “love triangle” which existed between Luke, Leia, and Han. It is a bit awkward how much of a focus there was on this compared to what we ended up seeing in the movie itself.

On top of that, spoilers didn’t seem to be quite as large of a concern when this documentary was filmed, so you have to wonder if it was released before or after the feature film.

Another interesting note is there is a much larger focus on the views of director Irvin Kershner and producer Gary Kurtz instead of George Lucas who only makes a brief appearance.

Much of the cast and crew help share minor insights as well which helps make this to be an interesting viewing as that wasn’t quite often the practice until the rise of the Internet helped to expand what we could learn about films.
