Ava DuVernay

Disney’s adaptation of the 1965 novel ‘A Wrinkle in Time‘ by Madeline L’Engle is finally moving forward as they have officially tapped Ava DuVernay (‘Selma’,’Middle of Nowhere’) to direct the film. The studio clearly loves her work and had initially been in talks with her to tackle Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ but when that fell through this looked to be the perfect movie for them to work with her on.

Rumors had her in talks with Disney a few months back and after six months of negotiations, it looks like DuVernay and Disney have finalized things and she’ll be directing the script which was put together by Jennifer Lee (‘Frozen’).

While not currently on the level of ‘Star Wars’ or a Marvel Studios film, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ could be the start of another glorious ongoing universe for the studio. The movie will mirror the book which is the first in a set of novels which will take a young woman who is looking for her father across dimensions and sets her on a course for adventure with all kinds of incredible creatures. There are currently five novels that make up the entire series and with being able to expand them into multiple movies each we could potentially have a 5-10 movie run on our hands.

DuVernay currently has a lot of offers on her plate but knowing Disney, this one is most likely going to be her top priority for the foreseeable future. At this time, no casting or release dates have been announced for the film.

This will actually be the second attempt at adapting the film to screen, only the first time around was an extremely unsucessful television show which didn’t garner much attention. Hopefully, with Disney and a big budget behind it, we’ll be seeing something a little more epic this time around.
