ava DuVernay selma red carpet

Ava DuVernay is making some serious waves right now, especially for those who read and enjoyed the beloved children’s classic ‘A Wrinkle in Time.’ You see, for such a beloved story, it has only been adapted to the screen once so far, in a middling TV mini-series that was not met with much admiration at the time. Fortunately for us, Disney is now financing another go at the novel, this time as a full-fledged movie, and they are eying Ava DuVernay to direct. The woman, who received great critical acclaim for her work directing ‘Selma,’ is also being offered the role of director on the Colin Trevorrow project ‘Intelligent Life,’ but sources say that the two films would not be in conflict if DuVernay chose to direct both. And if she did choose to direct ‘A Wrinkle in Time,’ the film would have quite a team behind it as the screenplay was penned by Jennifer Lee, who you might know as the writer and co-director of a little Disney film known as ‘Frozen’. Also in the works for DuVernay is an original drama series for the OWN network called ‘Queen Sugar.’

For those not in the know about the 1963 novel ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ by Madeline L’Engle, it tells the story of Meg Murray and her little brother Charles Wallace, whose journey takes them across time and space, and across dimensions in order to find their father, a scientist who has gone missing. Their travels are possible due to a mysterious Tesseract they find, and their adventures also involve a kid named Calvin, who I will not discuss as it may give away spoilers. Best of all (for Disney and audiences if the movie does well), the novel is the first in a larger series, meaning we could have another franchise on our hands as along as ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ does not go the way of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ movie adaptations.

What are your thoughts on DuVernay directing ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ ? Do you think she can hit the right tone for the children’s story? Share your opinions in the comments below!
