When ABC launches Marvel’s upcoming ‘Agent Carter,’ it’ll have at least one additional new face as Shea Whigham (‘True Detective’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’) has just joined the cast.

‘Agent Carter’ is set in 1946 where we see Steve Rogers’ former girl, Peggy Carter, working for the Strategic Scientific Reserve. She is relegated to doing administrative work while also going on secret missions with Howard Stark. According to Deadline, Whigham will be playing  the “tough but fair-minded Strategic Scientific Reserve Chief, Roger Dooley.” In other words, he’ll be the pre-Coulson in a pre-S.H.I.E.L.D. era.

Carter will be reporting directly to Whigham’s character who is in charge of not just Carter but also Chad Michael Murray’s Thompson and Enver Gjokaj’s Sousa (the last two were recent additions to the cast). It’ll be interesting to see how the SSR handles the threats to the United States as well as how much Hydra ends up being a factor on the show.

No word yet if Whigham’s character will be a part of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ crossover event that will first introduce us to the ‘Agent Carter’ characters on television.

I love that Marvel is willing to do a period piece that, aside from a now frozen Captain America, takes place before the time of true super heroes and villains in the cinematic Marvel Universe.
