Welcome back once again to a brand spanking new Toy News Tuesday! We’re the one weekly column right here on ScienceFiction.com where we seek out all of the awesome news you need to know about any announcements and cool happenings in the toy industry and put them all in one easy to find place for you! We’ve almost made it to the end of the line! That’s right people, San Diego Comic-Con 2018 is just a few days away later this week! That means this is our last batch of exclusives being announced for some time, and this weekend you can look forward to a ton of news coming straight out of the convention itself! Sadly, this also means we won’t be seeing a proper ‘Toy News Tuesday’ next week, but you’ll get to see plenty of great stuff coming out of the con either way! For now, let’s dive into the Toy News for the week of July 17th, 2018!
‘Who’ Is Going To Comic Con?
This week fans from all over the globe will be gathering together in sunny California for San Diego Comic-Con 2018! The team at BBC Studios have announced that they can look forward to a special guest attending from somewhere deep throughout time and space with The Thirteenth Doctor from ‘Doctor Who’ making her first appearance at the convention! Aside bringing actress Jodie Whittaker (who is playing the new Thirteenth ((and first female)) incarnation of the titular hero of the long-standing ‘Doctor Who’ series) to SDCC, BBC Studios is also premiering a ton of fantastic new Thirteenth Doctor merchandise for the first time at the convention that won’t be widely available until later this fall! For the first time ever fans will be able to grab new Thirteenth Doctor collectibles from the teams at Funko, Titan Merchandise, Her Universe, and Character Options!
Titan Merchandise is producing two limited-run Thirteenth Doctor collectibles in the form of 6.5″ scaled vinyl TITAN and Kawaii Titan figures. These will both be available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con at both the Titan Merchandise booth and the BBC America booth. It is probably safe to assume that we will see smaller scale versions of both of these figure designs hitting retailers this fall.
The team at Funko is premiering their all-new Thirteenth Doctor POP! Vinyl figure at San Diego Comic-Con, with the new POP! available both at the Funko booth and the BBC America booth. This new POP! Vinyl of The Thirteenth Doctor is set to have a wide release this fall in both the U.S. and The U.K..Additionally, Funko will also be releasing a Thirteenth Doctor figure as part of their ‘Rock Candy’ line this fall! Sadly, the ‘Rock Candy’ Thirteenth Doctor will not be available at San Diego Comic-Con.
The Her Universe brand will also have a showing at SDCC with new additions to their fan favorite costume themed clothing line including The Thirteenth Doctor’s long coat, rainbow striped top, and blue trousers! These will all be available first at SDCC at the Her Universe booth, and later this fall at Hot Topic stores in the U.S.
Last but not least, the team at Character Options has also announced an all-new Thirteenth Doctor collectible, but sadly it won’t be coming to San Diego Comic Con! Hitting stores a few weeks later this August is the new 10″ scale Thirteenth Doctor figure that features a spot on likeness of actress Jodie Whittaker in real fabric clothes! The Thirteenth Doctor comes in her usual outfit (which is quickly becoming iconic) and includes a Sonic Screwdriver accessory. Unfortunately, there is no word on exact release date or pricing for this figure at this time, with the only solid info being that we can expect to see it hit the market this August.
MEGO ‘Target’s A Big Return
It’s been years since the hey-day MEGO action figures, which were fully articulated 8″ scale figures made in the late 70’s and early 80’s featuring some of your favorite movie, television, cartoon, and comic book characters. These figures featured real cloth outfits and the line was known for its vehicles and playsets that were some of the first of their kind. Now, after laying dormant and watching a number of imitators pay homage to the line, MEGO is primed to make their triumphant return with a who new line of their own that will be found exclusively at Target stores!
Expected to start hitting shelves at the end of the month, MEGO is back and they’re hoping to make an impact! The new MEGO figures will remain stylized like the original figures of yesteryear, with figures available in the classic 8″ scale as well as 14″ deluxe figures and even some figure 2-packs with dioramas! The new line is expected to be a healthy blend of classic MEGO license as well as some new licenses that have never before been a part of the MEGO brand! Check out a sneak peek at some of the new MEGO figures and the full press release from Target and MEGO below!
This Classic Action Figure Line is About to Make a Comeback, and It’s Only at Target
Ready for a blast from the past? Toymaker Mego and industry legend Marty Abrams, co-founder and CEO of Mego Corporation, are recreating the company’s famous action figure line, and Target will be the exclusive retailer. The new line of collectibles hits stores and Target.com July 29, but fans will get a first look next week during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con—one of the largest gatherings of comic, movie and science fiction fans in the world.
Collectors will recognize the Mego name—the company’s signature line of action figures and celebrity dolls rose to popularity in the 1970s with some of the first articulated action figures on the market. So we jumped at the chance to help the nostalgic brand bring its beloved products back so our guests can share the fond memories with their kids. It’s one way we bring our guests products they won’t find anywhere else.
Marty Abrams and Mego have captured the spirit of the original line with throwbacks to popular classic TV, movie and cartoon characters—like the cast of “Star Trek,” Broadway Joe Namath and Action Jackson—and add some new characters from fan-fave shows like “The Brady Bunch,” “Cheers,” “I Dream of Jeannie” and “Married with Children.” The line will feature 8-inch figures, 14-inch figures, and 8-inch figure 2-pack dioramas.
In addition to the Mego line, Comic-Con attendees will also get a preview of more exciting new Target-exclusive products, like a Studio Series Transformers Bumblebee Helmet from Hasbro, a WWE Elite Action Figure from Mattel and multiple shared exclusives from Funko.
Target’s exclusive line of Mego collectibles will be available in stores and online July 29 at prices ranging from $14.99 to $29.99. Check out our full assortment of collectibles at Target stores nationwide and Target.com.
