The King of the Seas returns to the world of animation, just as the comic book version is enjoying an unprecedented surge in popularity, starring in two comics, sharing the spotlight in ‘Justice League,’ and heading to the big screen in ‘Batman V. Superman” Dawn of Justice’ to be portrayed by Jason Momoa.  Now Aquaman is kicking back to the world of animation in next year’s direct-to-DVD/BluRay movie ‘Justice League: Throne of Atlantis’ an adaptation of the crossover comic story.  Aquaman has been a mainstay in DC’s animated world, going all the way back to 1968’s ‘The Superman/Aquaman Hour Of Adventure’ and carrying on through the long-running ‘Superfriends’ series, ‘Justice League’, ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ and most recently ‘Young Justice’.

Aquaman is the hybrid son of the Queen of Atlantis and a human father.  He has nearly bullet-proof skin, super strength, powerful leaping, the ability to breathe on both land and underwater and telepathy.  The version that will appear in the movie is similar to the comic look, but has been slightly tweaked.  You can check out the action figure below that shows how he will appear:

Not sure why they ditched the full-hand gloves, but they don’t look bad.  Interestingly, it looks like his tights have been switched to black, like his trunks used to be pre-New 52 and the green elements are reduced to a “boot”-like design.  But in general, it doesn’t look bad at all or that foreign from the source material.

Next up is his love Mera, who has the power to manipulate water:

Now Mera is nearly completely redesigned.  Her classic tiara is at least referenced but almost everything else is fresh.  Her bare feet recall Aquaman and Aqualad as they were depicted on ‘Young Justice’.

Aquaman’s brother Orm, or Ocean Master is also included.  His appearance looks very close to the comic version, but is a little more stylized.  His mask slightly resembles the face of Lagoon Boy/L’Gaan on ‘Young Justice’.

And finally, we have Black Manta, whose classic appearance has always been pretty basic.  Once again, he’s more stylized here and a little chunkier.  Black Manta wasn’t part of the original comic story, so it will be interesting to see how he is worked into the story.

One element from the story that I would LOVE to see is that the Justice League called on reserves to help out, including Black Lightning, Vixen, Black Canary, Zatanna and more.  Will these characters factor into the movie?  (I doubt it, but I can wish.)

What do you think?  Are you looking forward to ‘Throne of Atlantis’?  What would you like to see in the movie?  Will you pick up these action figures?
