For a while now ‘Wonder Woman’ fans have been wondering how exactly Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor character was going to be a part of ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ especially since the man so bravely sacrificed himself during the climax of the first film. And yet there were reports of Chris Pine being on set for the sequel, with him telling Variety that his character was like “a deer in the headlights” this time around, making everyone wonder how the hell a “mortal” man was going to not only live past the airplane explosion of Part 1, but also live long enough to be alive in 1984 when the sequel takes place (the thought being that he was at least late-20s to early-30s in part 1, so 60-65 years later would be much longer than the average life-span of a man at that time). Now we have some answers, and boy are they are of the comic-book variety.

According to sources at We Got This Covered, apparently, a major villain in the film is going to be DC favorite Maxwell Lord (played by Pedro Pascal), and he is obsessed with finding magical artifacts that will make him as powerful “as a god.” One of these objects leads to the creation of Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), who vows vengeance on Lord for what he has done to her. So Lord turns to Wonder Woman for protection and uses another artifact to bring back Steve Trevor from the dead as some type of payment (which surely Wonder Woman will not be happy about, but we’ll have to see how it plays out in the movie). This would explain Pine’s “deer in headlights” comment as he would ostensibly be the same age he was in the last movie, with the same memories, only he would be 60-70 years in the future, and Diana would now be showing him around/ how everything works, much in the same way he did for her in the first movie, which is kind of an interesting idea. Still, the whole thing smacks of tragedy as I doubt Steve’s resurrection will be permanent, not if it was done by some magical artifact, so I would not expect a happy ending for ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’ Let’s not forget it is not like we saw Steve hanging around during ‘Justice League.’

What are your thoughts on this potential way they might be bringing Steve Trevor back? Do you buy it? Or do you think there is another way they are going to do it? Feel free to share your own theories in the comments below!
