Recently, former WWE Champion Dave Bautista joined the cast of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, but now it looks as if the current UFC Welterweight Champion wants in on the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. According to Latino Review, it appears that Georges St-Pierre will be joining the cast of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and you’ll never guess who he’s lined up to play.
On the villain front, Steve Rogers already has his hands full in his next solo big screen adventure. The Sentinel of Liberty is set to face off against the mercenary Crossbones, the Red Skull’s right hand man Arnim Zola, and, of course, the Winter Soldier, but the directing duo of the Russo brothers must not think that the amount of evil in their movie is adequate enough yet. According to the report, GSP will play Cap’s nemesis Batroc the Leaper. Though he might not be one of the most well known Marvel villains, he can certainly fit into their realistic movies.
Georges Batroc has no superpowers, but he’s quite the physical specimen. Not only is he a mercenary, but he’s also very agile, a master of the French form of kickboxing known as savate, an Olympic-level weightlifter, and a former member of the French Foreign Legion. The man is a regular old fighter from France with a code of honor that would lead him to turn on an employer whom he feels to be deceiving him. Essentially, Batroc the Leaper IS Georges St-Pierre, right down to the first name, even though GSP is actually Canadian and not French.
This bit of casting news is great. It’s quite spot on, which is something that Marvel has been spectacular at since they started handling their own films. Though he has a fairly limited acting resume, this role doesn’t seem like one that will need an Oscar winning performance, so I anticipate GSP to do just fine.
So far, there hasn’t been any comment from Disney or Marvel on this news, since they typically don’t confirm casting until production has started, but if this turns out to be true, then I know that I’ll be perfectly fine with it.
