Giant robot movies are so in right now. Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ is on it’s way to theaters and Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers’ franchise is gearing up for a fourth installment. Now, Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment, the producers of ‘The Walking Dead’, are entering the giant robot market by teaming with All Nippon Entertainment Works to develop ‘Gaiking’, a live-action film based on the Japanese anime and popular toy line from the late 70s known as ‘Shogun Warriors’ in the US.

According to a recent press release (via /Film), the movie  “follows a young man who is recruited to serve as the lead pilot for the Super Robot Gaiking. When Earth is threatened by an alien race intent on taking over the planet, he emerges as the only one who can pilot the massive robot. Together with his fellow co-pilots he must fight off the alien force in order to save mankind.”

Toei Animation, the company behind ‘Gaiking’ and other popular animes such as ‘Sailor Moon’ and ‘Dragon Ball’, provides concept art for the new film and can be seen above. While it looks pretty cool despite not being as colorful as the robots one might associate with the series, the whole thing just reminds me of Voltron, which would make a more awesome movie, in my opinion.

Now that Valhalla Entertainment is putting up the money, it’s expected that a writer will be brought on any day now.
