Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX.

Just like ‘Avengers: Endgame,‘ everyone had been dying to find out the title for ‘Star Wars: Episode 9’ but it wasn’t just a surprise for fans, but the cast as well. According to director J.J. Abrams, he gave them a fake title while filming.

While Abrams doesn’t give us the specifics of how this title comes into play, he does share the broad strokes as to why it fits the tale he is going to be telling us this Christmas:

“The title feels like it’s the right title for this movie, and I know that it’s provocative and asks a bunch of questions. But I think when you see the movie, you’ll see how it’s intended, what it means. But in the flow of titles, this movie had a very weird responsibility. It had to be the end of not just three movies, but nine movies, and the idea of having to incorporate the stories that have come before strangely is the story of the movie. Which is to say it’s the characters in the film inheriting everything that’s come before in previous generations, whether it’s sins of the father, whether it’s the wisdom that they’ve acquired. And the question is this new generation, are they up to the task, can they stand up to what they have to? And so in a way, I feel like we coming into this movie have inherited a lot, and the question is can we do it? And that question we ask ourselves every day.”

We’ll still have to wait to see if the Skywalker in the title refers to Luke, Leia, Rey, Ben, an unknown Skywalker, or something else entirely.

As to the cast not knowing the title, Daisy Ridley shared:

“Last night, John [Boyega] still hadn’t seen the teaser, so we all watched it last night. He was all, ‘What is that title?!’”

Outside of keeping spoilers away from the public, it seems strange that the actors weren’t able to know what the film was called which hardly seems to reveal anything directly about the film.

What do you think of the title ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’? Do you think it is strange that the actual cast wasn’t aware of what the movie was going to be called? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ will close out The Skywalker Saga when it is released on December 20th, 2019.
