Brent Spiner as Data

There was a lot wrong with ‘Star Trek: Nemesis,’ but one of the most emotional scenes was when Brent Spiner’s Data sacrificed himself to save Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard. In order to return for ‘Star Trek: Picard,’ Spiner stressed that his sacrifice was something that he didn’t want to be undone. Of course,  he has also previously stated that he only returned because CGI’s gone a long way.”

According to Spiner in an interview with Syfy Wire:

“It was definitely important that we didn’t do anything that would undermine anything that had been done before. But I think when you see the whole season … I can’t say anything else.”

We’ve heard a slew of rumors on how Data could return since his inclusion in ‘Star Trek: Picard’ was announced, and quite a few of them were feasible. One of the most exciting things for the actor was being able to work with Stewart once more:

“The producers and writers of the show are incredible [and] really brilliant. There was Patrick [Stewart], which was a huge draw because I love Patrick, and I love working with him … It was strange and wonderful and just curious. I remember when we shot the first scene in the show, the very first shot, and we were sitting across from each other, going, ‘Can you believe this?’”

Now, we won’t go into spoilers as to how Data has been showcased so far and what that means for the series as not everyone has CBS All Access or has had a chance to stream the first episode quite yet. All I’ll say is that Spiner’s thoughts here did seem to be what they’ve portrayed so far.

Do you agree with Brent Spiner on this stipulation of Data’s return in ‘Star Trek: Picard’? What are your thoughts on how Data will be back for the first season as it progresses? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
