Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets

Over the weekend, Hollywood gathered at the MTV Movie Awards to honor this past year’s best movies (according to the MTV audience). Definitely far from the Oscars and the Academy’s usual selections, films like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Deadpool’, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, and ‘Jurassic World’ walked away with awards in categories such as Best Female Performance, Best Breakthrough Performance, and Best Fight. And in addition to standouts from 2015, the show gave its viewers some sneak peeks at some of 2016’s most anticipated films. For instance, new trailers dropped for ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, ‘Suicide Squad’, and ‘Captain America: Civil War’. But if you weren’t watching the red carpet pre-show, then you missed a special behind the scenes look at one of the most mysterious projects coming our way.

A few weeks ago, French filmmaker Luc Besson began production on his adaptation of ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. Very few details have been released about the project based on a seminal 1967 French sci-fi comic series such as which actors are playing which parts, but MTV sent Josh Horowitz behind the scenes in Paris to get the scoop on the upcoming movie. In speaking with the cast and crew, he didn’t find out too much, although he certainly got some teases about Rihanna’s character and a demonstration of Delevingne’s ass-kicking skills. You can check out the video below, followed by the official synopsis of the film:

Valerian and Laureline are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander, Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

What do you think about the latest look at ‘Valerian’? Are you excited to check out an adaptation of the story that inspired such fan favorites as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Avatar’? And who do you think Rihanna will be playing in the movie? Let us know your thoughts and theories in the comments.

‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Rutger Hauer, Herbie Hancock, and John Goodman takes off on July 21, 2017.
