Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets

After dabbling in a number of projects since the kick-ass Scarlet Johansson action film ‘Lucy’, French filmmaker Luc Besson is finally getting back to his director’s chair for ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’. The adaptation of the best-selling comic series created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as a pair of time and space traveling agents will see Besson return to the weird and fantastical sci-fi stories (namely ‘The Fifth Element’) that really put him on the map, but with hints of ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Star Wars’ mixed in. And now, we have our first look at the upcoming film.

After staying relatively quite about the project since shooting commenced, the director recently took to his Instagram to share the first image of himself with his young stars as Valerian and Laureline:

But this was only a teaser for what was still to come. The following day, Entertainment Weekly shared even more pictures from the production. They came with a new interview where Besson was mostly tight-lipped about his latest project. Although, he did reveal that James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ really inspired him to finally move forward on this movie. With his vision finally becoming a reality and setting a course for a theater near you sooner rather than later, you can check out a few stills featuring DeHaan, Delevingne, and a big metallic robot police officer named K-Tron in the gallery below:

Finally, if you want to know more about the movie, we do have this descriptive synopsis that gives us the basics of the story:

Valerian and Laureline are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander, Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
