Wonder Woman 1984

In 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman,’ we saw a constant use of her sword and shield throughout the film. Both are conspicuously absent in the trailer for ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and that wasn’t an accident.

Gal Gadot explained that switching up how Diana dealt with villains for the upcoming sequel was a conscious choice. When it came to the sword, the decision not to include it boiled down to the intent of the weapon. As for the shield, it was more of who Wonder Woman is that has her leaving it at home.

In an interview with Cinepop, Gadot explains:

“Wonder Woman does not carry a weapon. We had an intention to let go of the sword because there’s something very aggressive with a sword. If you have a sword, it means you need to use it. So we wanted to give that up. And we didn’t feel that the shield was necessary either. She’s a goddess, she can fight, she’s super strong, and she has the skills. So no, she has the gauntlets. She has the lasso. She has her tiara, and that’s about it.”

This change of tools shouldn’t just give us a unique take on the fighting in the film but it also makes sense about what we know of Diana. She doesn’t want to go out and kill people, which her sword would require. As she’s been fighting villains of humanity for 66-years, there probably isn’t much that she has come across which could directly harm her. Lugging the shield around likely isn’t heavy for her but would get in the way of her secret identity.

You don’t generally see people walking around with shields in the 1980s.
