Christopher Paolini made his name as an author with ‘Eragon’ and the successful “Inheritance Cycle” and now is jumping from fantasy to science fiction. Tor Books will be releasing his next novel, ‘To Sleep in a Sea of Stars’ on September 15th, 2020! Unlike the young adult market which his works were previously aimed at, this looks to be his first adult-oriented novel. We first heard hints that it was coming earlier this year when he teased that he was finishing up a “massive sci-fi novel” while promoting his short story collection ‘The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm‘.

It should prove of interest to fans that this novel has been in the works for 10-years as Paolini has been “figuring out the science and the characters and, most importantly, the story.”

As to what we can expect in the series? A brief synopsis is below:

During a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet, xenobiologist Kira Navárez finds an alien relic that thrusts her into the wonders and nightmares of first contact. Epic space battles for the fate of humanity take her to the farthest reaches of the galaxy and, in the process, transform not only her—but the entire course of history.

Paolini had returned to the fantasy genre with ‘The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm’ but don’t expect that to be his last set of stories set in Alagaësia. when it comes to his fantasy works, the author teased, “There’s a good chance that readers are going to get a whole lot more of Paolini in the near future.”

Tor Vice President and Publisher Devi Pillai weighed in on the novel:

“The opportunity to publish authors of Christopher Paolini’s caliber do not come along often. I have been a tremendous fan of The Inheritance Cycle, and I am thrilled to work with him on his first adult novel and first foray into science fiction. I can’t wait for his fans to read #TSIASOS and enter the amazing world he has created.”

With ‘To Sleep in a Sea of Stars’ gearing up for release, I suspect that more announcements are on the horizon!
