Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil
Disney

With final numbers being reported, there is a change-up on the weekend box office charts.  Previous estimates pegged ‘Joker’ as coming in at #1 with $18.9M, just narrowly edging out last weekend’s #1, ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ which was reported as earning $18.5M.  But now that the numbers have been crunched, ‘Maleficent’ actually flew ahead with $19.37M, versus ‘Joker’s $19.25M.  As you can also see, both movies made more than they were estimated to have.  The remainder of the Top Five remained consistent.

TOP FIVE

  1. Warner Brothers

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (Disney) – $19.37M

  2. Joker (Warner Brothers/Village Roadshow/Bron Films) – $19.25M
  3. The Addams Family (MGM/UAR) – $11.5M
  4. Zombieland: Double Tap (Sony) – $11.6M
  5. Countdown (STX Films) – $9M

Even with a #1 finish, this is kind of a consolation prize for Disney, as $19.37M isn’t enough to make ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ a domestic hit.  It still has only accumulated $66M over ten days.  Meanwhile, ‘Joker’ has been out for a month and is performing in the same range.  It has already become the highest-grossing R-rated movie internationally.

Luckily, ‘Maleficent’ is a bigger hit overseas, where it has racked up over $229M.  ‘Joker’ has accumulated $852M worldwide, on a minuscule budget of $55M.  ‘Maleficent’ reportedly cost $185M before advertising, so it may not have broken even yet, but thankfully for Disney, it isn’t a complete flop.

Both are about to take a tumble, as ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ opens this weekend, and is expected to make between $41M and $47M.  The following week delivers the Stephen King adaptation ‘Doctor Sleep’, highly-publicized rom-com ‘Last Christmas’, and war pic ‘Midway’.  After that comes ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘Ford v Ferrari’, followed by ‘Frozen II’ and ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’.

After a post-summer lull, the box office is starting to heat back up, as we head toward the holidays.  What are you most looking forward to seeing?
