It wasn’t a huge shock that Freeform cancelled ‘Cloak & Dagger’, its Marvel Comics-inspired series about young superbeings coming to grips with their emerging abilities. Just as the street-level characters in the comics, the ‘Cloak & Dagger’ TV show addressed real issues facing young people, including racism, sexism, drug abuse, and human trafficking.

Olivia Holt co-starred as Tandy, a.k.a. Dagger. Following the cancellation of the show, she penned a lengthy and heartfelt open letter to her “#CloakandDaggerFamily, in which she expressed her gratitude for getting to tell the stories that the show was able to during its two-season life span.
“To our fans that became more like family, WOW. Thank you for trusting us and believing so fiercely in this story and for seeing yourselves in Tandy and Tyrone.”

Freeform reported that ratings for ‘Cloak & Dagger’ fell by about 40% for its second season. Even so, like many shows of this nature, it attracted a passionate fanbase that continues to support it. At this time, fans are lobbying Hulu to pick up the series, as it already delivers its own Marvel show with a young cast, ‘Runaways’. In fact, Holt and her costar Aubrey Joseph will appear as Tandy and Tyrone in the upcoming third season of ‘Runaways’ which will arrive in December.

However, ‘Cloak & Dagger’s cancellation came on the heels of news that Marvel Television, which produced this and all other existing Marvel TV shows, was shifting under the control of Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige. As a result, Jeph Loeb, who oversaw the development of ‘Cloak & Dagger’ and the rest, is leaving the company. Expect major changes in Marvel TV shows moving forward, as Marvel Studios already has higher-budgeted and higher-profile series coming to Disney+. Expect these fringe-ier, lower-profile shows like ‘Cloak & Dagger’ to disappear and be replaced with bigger shows that more closely resemble and connect to the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe.
