Jumanji: The Next Level

We’re in a bit of a lull at the box office, but this is just a rest stop.  As we move toward the holidays, expect more big-budget tentpole fare, and among the highest-profile pictures set to arrive is ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’, the sequel to 2017’s ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’, Sony’s highest-grossing domestic film of all time.  (It still outranks ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, the studio’s top movie worldwide.)

Jack Black, Kevin HartKaren Gillan, and Dwayne Johnson are back, but as we saw in the trailer for the new film, things are getting twisted, as the game avatars are switched around with new “players” including Danny DeVito as Spencer’s cantankerous grandfather Eddie, and Danny Glover as his neighbor Milo.

There’s not much to be learned about the film’s plot from the new poster.  It simply features the four stars surrounded by mandrils.  But perhaps that IS part of the storyline.

Check it out below, as tweeted by Johnson:

Also returning from the first movie are Nick Jonas as game avatar Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough, and Rhys Darby as Nigel Billingsley, the NPC game guide.  Ser’Darius BlainColin Hanks, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Alex Wolff are also back as the real-world characters that were stuck in the ‘Jumanji’ video game– respectively, Anthony “Fridge” Johnson, Alex Vreeke, Bethany Walker, Martha Kaply, and Spencer Gilpin.

Upon returning to the game, Martha discovers that she is the only one to return to her previous avatar, Ruby Roundhouse.  Fridge is now stuck in the body of Shelly, but Spencer and Bethany are nowhere to be found.  Instead, the body of Smoulder Brimstone is occupied by Spencer’s grandpa Eddie, while Milo is in Mouse’s body!

Also joining the cast is Awkwafina as an unrevealed avatar.

Where are the others?  We’ll have to wait until ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ opens on December 13, 2019 to find out.
